Pantone announced the 2021 color(s) of the year yesterday. I am normally pretty good at predicting the color ahead of time. This year caught me off guard. ULTIMATE GRAY and ILLUMINATING were not the colors I expected.
Pantone’s executive director Leatrice Eiseman described Ultimate Gray as “emblematic of solid and dependable elements which are everlasting and provide a firm foundation” such as the colors of pebbles on the beach,” while Illuminating is “a bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity.”
The more I started thinking about this duo, the more I started to like it. After the year the event industry had in 2020, we all need a firm foundation with a spark of sparkling vivacity in 2021!
Taking Ultimate Gray and Illumination as the starting point for event inspiration, I started to imaging variations of this pairing. Riffing on this, I started to imagine variations in this same color family. Mustard yellow, canary yellow, sunflower yellow, citron, gold. Black, slate, pewter, gun metal, silver.
FLORAL
The first think anyone probably things about when they consider yellow florals is sunflowers. Being from Kansas, many brides have a fondness for these big, bold stems. There are so many interesting yellow blooms to use for your event florals. From vibrant yellow to more natural and muted tones, yellow flowers can add visual interest to your designs.
Lemons are a fun addition to floral arrangements! Not only does it add impactful color, it will provide a refreshing, fresh scent to the space. Billy Balls are another fun and whimsical accent flower to add. They dry well for a fun keepsake from your arrangement.
The sure sign of spring is budding and blooming branches. Forsythia, a member of the olive family, produces beautiful yellow buds! Everyone loves a Peony. These yellow blossoms are fun and flirty.
Snapdragons give an elegant linear design element to a design and create dynamic texture in your arrangements. This peachy-yellow poppy with it's tissue paper texture is a showstopper.
Preserved materials can be tinted in any color. This Yarrow, in a beautiful mustard color is a striking addition to a beautiful boho design. The Ranunculus has quickly become one of the event industries go-to flowers. Delicate, high petal count blooms with dancing stems work nicely into bouquets, corsages and much more.
At first thought, you may thing gray florals aren't a thing. Wrong. There are some sophisticated and beautiful stems in the gray family. Dusty Miller and Silver Brunia are some of my favorite wedding stems. Their gray-toned beauty is a welcome compliment to the shiny green tones of most floral greenery. Gray Roses are bonkers! These beautiful blooms are uncommon in most floral designs and always surprise and impress when used in our designs. Shown here with Sage and Spiral Eucalyptus, this grayish bout is sophisticated!
FASHION
Incorporating yellow into your bridal fashion is not for everyone as yellow doesnt look good on everyone. If you can pull it off and yellow is your vibe, go for it! Gray on the other hand is a natural in formalwear. The fun pop of color in the bridesmaids shoe selection is an unexpected touch!
DECOR & TABLETOP
These curtains, found while quickly scanning Pinterest for yellow and gray inspiration are a beautiful blending on this color of the year theme. The ombre effect is modern and fun. It got me thinking about the return of Ombre to the event world.
A quick browse through Wichita Event Rentals linen inventory proved that we are ready for the Ultimate Gray and Illuminating trend! Check out these linens, pressed and ready for your next party!
